Castle Wartburg - Thuringia

Walk across the ancient draw bridge into one of the oldest and best-preserved Romanesque castles in Germany. Its massive walls provided refuge to the German church reformer Martin Luther and it is at the Wartburg Castle where he translated the Bible in only eleven weeks.

The gun powder tower and dungeons date back to the 14th Century but the origins of the castle go back to the 11th Century. The impressive dimensions and ornate decoration of the festival hall so impressed King Ludwig II that he had an exact immitation build in his fairy-tale castle Neuschwanstein. The Wartburg castle hotel has retained its friendly hospitality since the first pilgrims knocked on its doors.  More hotel information and guest reviews
